‘This war was avoidable,’ says former former PM Ranil (Video)
COLOMBO: The ongoing Russia-Ukraine military conflict could have been avoided, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in a recent interview.
“This war was avoidable,” said the National List UNP MP.
“Ukraine is basically was part of the old Soviet Union. Russians think of Ukraine like we here will think of Kandy,” he said.
“The real issue is really about the security of Russia,” said the MP.
“The fact is America is more powerful. But (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has the second largest nuclear arsenal in the world. The danger lies there,” said the UNP leader.
The MP also analyzed the domestic politics behind the interests of US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and Australian Premier Scott Morrison in the current global crisis.
“It looks as if the whole of Asia — most of them — are going along with Russia. Asia counts today,” he pointed out.
