Sri Lanka should obtain patent for Kottu: Dr. Charitha Herath

Sri Lanka must obtain the patent for Kottu, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Dr. Charitha Herath proposed in Parliament.

He said Sri Lanka could work towards making Kottu synonymous with the indigenous foods of other countries, such as pizza in Italy and hamburgers in the USA.

Dr. Herath revealed that it has been found that Kottu originated from Batticaloa, adding that it now has so many varieties, including ice cream Kottu.

Stating that attention should be focused on obtaining patents for indigenous foods of Sri Lanka, he said this could be used as a means to strengthen trade with developed countries.

Dr. Herath further pointed out that this could improve the export sector of the country and will also bring about a positive impact for Sri Lanka.
