Strike delayed, but Sri Lanka hit by power cuts
COLOMBO: All coal powered power plants in Sri Lanka are generating at full capacity and are connected to the national grid even though some hydro powered plants, Luxapana, Canyon, Wimalasurendra and Polpitiya, are isolated and non operational, according to reports.
The Second Reading of the Sri Lanka Electricity (Amendment) Bill is expected take place in Parliament on Thursday. Several CEB trade unions have expressed their opposition to the decision.
Several parts in the country were experiencing power cuts despite the CEB Engineers’ Union saying they had decided to temporarily call off the strike.
Some 900 out of around 1,100 engineers of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) earlier said they will not report for duty on Thursday and those already at power plants, transmission and distribution facilities will leave at midnight.
