Secure future for all Sri Lankans hoped
COLOMBO: Ambassador Julie Chung said on Thursday that the US looked forward to working with new Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremasinghe.
“In these challenging times, it will be essential for all parties to redouble efforts to work together to tackle the economic crisis, uphold democracy & accountability, and build a stable & secure future for all Sri Lankans,” said the envoy on Twitter.
Her support came as the protest movement that pushed out Rajapaksa remained largely muted, despite Wickremesinghe’s unpopularity among some sections of the population.
Only a handful of people were present outside the presidential secretariat on Thursday, a colonial-era building that was stormed by a sea of protesters earlier this month along with the president and prime minister’s official residences.
Veteran politician Wickremesinghe was sworn in as new president Thursday.
