International White Cane Day observed In Thunukai (Photos)
The International White Cane Day was observed in Thunukai area in northern Sri Lanka’s Mullaitivu district as a guiding light for the visually impaired people.
The International White Cane Day is marked on Oct.15 across the world across the world since 1964.
The event in Thunukai was organized by Shining Life organization. It was sponsored by BMZ.
Child Found, VOICE and ORHAN were involved in staging the event under the CBR3 strategy.
The event honored 18 beneficiaries on the basis of data from the Department of Social Services.
White Cane Day celebrates the independence of those who are blind or visually impaired and educates drivers on white cane laws.
White canes were introduced in the 1930s as a way of assisting visually impaired pedestrians to travel independently.
They also helped motorists identify and yield to people using the white cane.
White Cane Safety Day, Oct. 15, was established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson in an effort to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane.
In 1969, an international conference held in Colombo made a decision regarding White Cane Safety Day.
