MP Selvarajah Kajendren, 17 others granted bail

MP Selvarajah Kajendren and 17 others who were arrested on Saturday for entering a high-security zone in Jaffna have been released on bail, Ada Derana reporter said.

The Ahila Ilankai Thamil Congress (AITC) parliamentarian and others were taken into custody while engaging in a protest in violation of a court order.

The 18 citizens are:

8. P. Gunaratnam

12. S. Pathmanathan (Dilan)

13. L. Kokilan

14. Gnaneswaran

15. Ajanthan

16. Gokulan

17. Mathan

18. Sothi

Commenting on the incidents, Hasitha Liyanage said on Twitter: “For half a century we (Sinhalese) looked the other way (or actively cheered) as minorities were suppressed via state apparatus. Last year we reaped what we sowed. Don’t repeat this mistake. If you can’t stand with them out of basic humanity, at least do so out of self interest.”
