Kuwait announces plan to restrict expat population: Report
Kuwait officials have submitted an advisory report to the government to introduce expat quotas, according to a report by Kuwait Times.
The report said that private academic bodies tasked with studying population demographics in the Emirate have submitted an advisory report to the government outlining recommendations to address the imbalance of expatriates in the country.
The report was part of the executive authority’s directive to improve public services and infrastructure for Kuwaiti citizens.
The report highlighted several issues that were the focus of the recommendations, including fixing the demographic imbalance, improving the quality of expatriate workers, and reducing the number of unskilled expat workers.
The report also suggested implementing a quota for each nationality in Kuwait to ensure that it does not exceed 25 percent of the number of Kuwaitis.
The Manpower Authority is currently reviewing a previous decision to grant work permits to individuals over the age of 60 without a college degree.
The decision was aimed at allowing older workers to move into the private sector, but its impact on the labor market is now being evaluated.
The advisory report proposed setting a period of time for each expatriate to reside in the country to help regulate excess and unnecessary labor in the market.
The report also recommended improving the quality of expatriate workers to enhance the level of services provided to citizens.
The government is expected to review the recommendations and implement measures to address the demographic imbalance and improve the quality of public services and infrastructure for citizens.
The implementation of quotas for nationalities is expected to be a key focus in the government’s efforts to address the population demographics in the country.
