President, Basil Rajapaksa discuss future political affairs

President Ranil Wickremesinghe held a discussion on March 21 with the founder of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, during which attention was drawn to the upcoming elections and future political affairs.

This meeting follows President Wickremesinghe’s informing the Cabinet of Ministers to make preparations for the presidential election first.

Thus, political sources said Basil Rajapaksa had communicated the SLPP’s stance concerning the upcoming elections to the President.

Nevertheless, it has been decided to continue discussions since no final agreement was reached between the two parties at the meeting.

It is also understood that a crisis situation has emerged within the SLPP due to the two contradictory opinions held by the party members regarding the presidential election.

However, an SLPP spokesperson expressed hopes of unifying all party members under one opinion after extensive discussions with the President.
