Workers’ remittances, tourism earnings rising
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) says the country’s trade services, mainly tourism earnings, have recovered significantly during the first two months of 2024, while the positive momentum of workers’ remittances has also continued.
During the special press briefing convened to present the second Monetary Policy Review of 2024, CBSL’s Economic Research Director, Dr. S. Jegajeevan, revealed that workers’ remittances were recorded at USD 964 million from January to February.
Meanwhile, tourism earnings were recorded at USD 687 million during these months.
According to CBSL’s figures, workers’ remittances and tourism earnings significantly improved last year compared to 2022.
Workers’ remittances increased from USD 3.8 billion in 2022 to USD 6 billion in 2023 while tourism earnings increased from USD 1.1 billion in 2022 to USD 2.1 billion in 2023.
