Former PM Manmohan Singh passes away
Dr. Manmohan Singh (1932–2024), India’s former Prime Minister and the visionary behind the transformative economic reforms of 1991, passed away on Thursday, December 26, in Delhi after a brief hospitalization. A stalwart of Indian politics, his passing has left a significant void in the nation.
The news of his demise brought an outpouring of tributes from all corners, including from his staunchest critics.
Rahul Gandhi, who worked closely with Dr. Singh for over two decades, reflected on the loss of a “mentor and guide” while attending the Congress working committee meeting in Belagavi. Writing on X, he shared, “Manmohan Singh Ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility and profound understanding of economics inspired the nation. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kaur and the family. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride.”
Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, the newly-elected MP from Wayanad, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Sardar Manmohan Singh Ji was a rare figure in politics who commanded unparalleled respect. His honesty will remain a guiding light, and he will always stand tall as someone who served this nation selflessly, even in the face of harsh and personal attacks from his opponents.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who succeeded Dr. Singh in 2014, also paid tribute, writing on X: “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble beginnings, he became a highly respected economist and held key roles in the government, including as Finance Minister, leaving a lasting legacy on our economic policies. His time in Parliament was marked by insightful interventions, and as Prime Minister, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of millions.
“During his tenure as PM, I interacted with Dr. Singh frequently while serving as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Our discussions on governance and various policies were always enlightening. His wisdom and humility shone through in every conversation.”
