‘Is it Monkey Business? If not, look inward at your own unions’ — Mano Ganesan tells govt

An opposition legislator has urged the NPP government to examine the role of trade unions associated with the JVP as an intruding monkey at an electrical grid substation reportedly caused a general islandwide blackout.

Although the power outage, which began around 11:30 am, was being restored on Sunday, the blackout invited some public criticism and social media reactions.

“A monkey has come in contact with our grid transformer, causing an imbalance in the system,” Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody was earlier quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

The intrusion took place in a southern Colombo suburb, he said.

MP and Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) leader Mano Ganesan urged the government to look inward toward their (JVP) trade unions.

The MP said, “Neither the Power and Energy Ministry nor the Ceylon Electricity Board confirmed the minister’s statement.”

He added: “People were kept in the dark for hours, but after the restoration, people are yet in the dark in respect of the root cause of this major power failure.”

The TPA leader took to the X platform and told the government to look inward toward their (JVP) trade unions.

The following is Mano Ganesan’s X post;

Is it MONKEY BUSINESS? If not, who’s business? All’s Well That Ends Well, when #CEB restored power after hours. But GOVT should look inwards towards their own trade union movement. These unions were used for sabotaging past govt activities, such as Reforms of SOE by Public-Private partnership programs, IMF, WB programs, developing #Hambantota, #Trincomalee seaports and #Palali, #Mattala airports with foreign participation and FDI etc. Hence, the nation has the right to question based on reasonable anxieties.

Public concerns rose as the general manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board reportedly said later at night that power disruptions had been reported again in several areas due to the Norochcholai coal power plant not functioning.

He said that thermal power was generated to restore supply to these areas.
