Catholic Church Condemns Disrespectful Act by Royal College Students

The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka has strongly condemned the actions of students from Royal College, Colombo, for what it described as an insult to the Christian cross, a sacred symbol in Christianity.
In a letter addressed to the school’s principal, Fr. Gemunu Dias, National Director of Education for the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka and General Manager of Catholic Schools, expressed deep disappointment over the incident.
“It has come to our attention that students from your institution carried a cross while engaging in behavior that was disrespectful to this sacred symbol. This act has deeply saddened the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, as well as priests and nuns across the country,” Fr. Dias stated.
He further emphasized that no religion should be disrespected and reminded the school of its historical roots, as it was founded by a Christian priest devoted to Christ’s teachings.
The incident has sparked concern among religious leaders, who stress the importance of mutual respect and interfaith harmony in Sri Lanka’s diverse society.
