Mano Ganesan highlights need for FTAs at party leaders’ talks with President

Participating in Thursday’s party leaders’ discussion with President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, senior parliamentarian Mano Ganesan expressed his belief that the era of globalization and multilateral pacts was declining.

Ganesan argued that the current time was opportune for bilateral discussions and the negotiation of Free Trade Agreements with every trading nation.

He emphasized that the government should not hesitate to adopt this approach toward the US.

Furthermore, Ganesan suggested that the government should explore alternative export markets.

He highlighted India as “our most lucrative destination.”

He urged the government to expedite negotiations for the Economic Trade Comprehensive Agreement (ETCA) with India and gain access to the Indian market for our products.

In response to the opinions of opposition party leaders, Mano Ganesan said the President announced that he would nominate a committee comprising both government and opposition members to evaluate and propose a response to the US tariff imposed on Sri Lanka.

Ganesan said the committee named by the President was expected to operate during the current 90-day grace period granted by US President Donald Trump.
