Jaffna election candidate becomes Sajith’s coordinating secretary

Umachandraa Pragash has been appointed as Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa’s coordinating secretary.

She unsuccessfully contested last month’s Parliamentary elections from the Jaffna district as a candidate of Premadasa-led Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

Her appointment comes as SJB faces some criticism from Tamil MPs over remarks made by a few of its parliamentarians against Jaffna MPs Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and C. V. Wigneswaran.

The new appointment was made on Tuesday morning in the office of the Leader of the Opposition.

In 2018, Ms. Pragash was elected as a member of the Colombo Municipal Council representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) but the prominent media personality switched allegiance to Premadasa during last year’s Presidential election campaign.
