‘Factually inaccurate ground realities reported in UN Human Rights Council draft’

COLOMBO: Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardane said Sri Lanka expects Commonwealth countries to support its principled position, especially the UN Human Rights Council, and revisit factually inaccurate ground realities reported in the UNHRC draft.

The minister made the remarks during a phone conversation with UK Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth, Lord Tariq Ahmad.

Minister Gunawardane has briefed Lord Ahmad on the newly appointed Commission of Inquiry into Human Rights violations.

The minister mentioned that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed a three-member Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry.

He said that the commission chaired by Supreme Court Judge Nawaz was appointed to investigate into records of accountability on human rights violations as pledged when Sri Lanka withdrew from ‘illegal’ co-sponsorship of UN Resolution.
