Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi ‘detained by the military’

Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained by the military, her party spokesman said in a report published by AFP.

“We heard the President (Win Myint) and State Counsellor (Aung San Suu Kyi) have been detained in Naypyidaw … we heard they were taken by the military,” said Myo Nyunt, spokesman for the ruling National League for Democracy.

“With the situation we see happening now, we have to assume that the military is staging a coup,” he added.

Her detention comes after a week of ramped up rhetoric from the military, whose spokesman on Tuesday refused to rule out the possibility of a coup, AFP reported.
