Jaffna key hub for Sri Lanka’s push for ‘agricultural revolution’
Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has announced plans to start an agricultural revolution from Sri Lanka’s northern province by encouraging local food production.
He indicated that necessary incentives and assistance would encourage farmers to deliver a wide range of agricultural products as part of the government’s efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency,
The minister’s agricultural plans were published in Tamil media this week ahead of his visit to Jaffna on Tuesday.
Jaffna MP Angajan Ramanathan (@AngajanR) tweeted: “The Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage visited Jaffna today. It was decided to provide potato seeds at a subsidy while providing insurance for crops such as small onions, banana and black gram.”
The MP is also the co-chairman of Jaffna District Coordinating Committee.
The minister has earlier stressed the need to follow the latest technologies and innovations to improve agricultural productivity.
