Potable water supply project for Jaffna Peninsula expedited
COLOMBO: The government has instructed the irrigation authorities to accelerate construction work of the Potable Water Supply Project for Jaffna Peninsula (PWSPJP).
The water project which costs the Irrigation Department Rs.13,300 million aims to cater to a population of 925,000 by 2028 with the water demand per day has been estimated as 17,000 acre feet.
The proposed water resource projects in and around the Northern Province are the Sea Water Desalinization Project, potable water supply project for the Jaffna Peninsula (Vadamarachchi Lagoon Project) Lower Paliara Reservoir Project, proposed (Modified) river for the Jaffna Project, Upper Parangiaru Reservoir Project and Lower Parangiara Project.
An Irrigation Department Spokesmen said the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has already been approved as well the required staff by the Management Service Department. GS&MB approval is awaited and detailed estimate has been prepared.
