SSP Shani Abeysekara,released on bail

SSP Shani Abeysekara, the former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been granted bail by the Appeals Court bench today (16), consisting of Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and R. Gurusinghe.

Police Sub-Inspector Sugath Mohan Mendis is also reported to have been released on bail.

The duo were released on a cash bail of Rs 25,000 and two personal bonds worth Rs 1 million each, however, the court imposed a foreign travel ban on both of them.

Abeysekara was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) on 31 July last year, for allegedly concealing and fabricating false evidence in the case filed against eight suspects including former DIG Vass Gunawardena and his son over the alleged possession of firearms.
