Prof. Tissa Vitharana backs strict travel restrictions to stop COVID-19 Delta variant
COLOMBO: Prof. Tissa Vitharana said that it is possible to control the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant by imposing strict travel restrictions without implementing a lockdown.
Professor Vitharana, who is a renowned virologist, said that what people must do mostly is to remain indoors in their homes which is a main factor in controlling the virus.
He also emphasized that since the COVID-19 virus spreads from person to person, the live substratum within which the virus grows, should be destroyed.
“Even a single virus can travel only a limited distance. If the virus is transmissible through the atmosphere, it could infect everybody. There is a possibility that the Delta variant of the virus may be subject to further deviations and variations in the future and far worse ones could be created,” he said.
Even then, if the entire country is locked down there will be no way of preventing a scarcity of food. What people should do to protect themselves from this is, wearing face masks, maintaining a distance, washing hands and refraining gatherings. People can prevent the virus from entering their bodies by following these actions.
He also emphasized that we should act in an intelligent and responsible manner, if we are to overcome the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.
