Jaffna Hospital performs first kidney transplant surgery

COLOMBO: The Jaffna Teaching Hospital (JTH) has performed its first kidney transplant operation successfully.

Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Dr. Sri Bavanandaraja said the operation performed at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital last Thursday was a great success.

This augurs well for efforts at organ transplant operations to be performed on critically ill patients at the hospital in the future, he added.

He also said that praise should go to doctors at the hospital who performed the operation, despite having their hands full with COVID-19 patients.

Doctors at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital said that the kidneys of Thangaraja Brinjan, who died in an accident in Jaffna, was donated to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital by his relatives and one of the kidneys was transplanted to a critically ill kidney patient in Jaffna.

As this is the first time that a kidney surgery has been performed at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, the assistance of a specialist doctor at the Kandy Teaching Hospital had been sought.
