Ranil Wickremesinghe to address UNPers and public through Zoom and Facebook

COLOMBO: The United National Party has developed a national action plan to build a better country post-COVID-19, said party chairman Vajira Abeywardena.

The UNP founded on Sept. 6, 1946 by Don Stephen Senanayake, will mark its 75th anniversary on Monday.

Abeywardena and several other UNP leaders convened a media briefing recently to announce its plans to celebrate the Party’s diamond jubilee.

“More importantly we have developed a national action plan to build a better country post-Covid-19. This will be announced by our leader coinciding with the anniversary,” he said.

According to Abeywardena, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will address the party members and the general public through Zoom and Facebook from 5 pm to 6 pm on Sunday Sept. 5.

“Starting from September 6 and running into a few days thereafter, the UNP will hold 75 meetings across Sri Lanka on Zoom video conferencing platform and Facebook. We invite all to log into these platforms to attend a meeting of their choice and learn about our new national plan to build a better country (post-covid),” he said.

He further said: “The UNP had been the governing party from 1947 to 1956, from 1965 to 1970, from 1977 to 1994, 2001 to 2004, and 2015 to 2019.”

“The UNP controlled the Executive Presidency for 16 years from 1978 to 1994. We’re a center-right party which pursues a liberal market economy which was introduced through the open economy concept to Sri Lanka in 1977.”

“Over the years, UNP adopted pro-people policies on agriculture, higher education, housing, transport, healthcare, power generation, irrigation and infrastructure development among others,” he said.
