Continued closure ‘will have a detrimental impact on economy’

COLOMBO: The Chief Incumbent of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanaratana Thera called on citizens to be more responsible in this lockdown period.

The Thera said it is not possible to continue the countrywide lockdown to arrest the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the people should understand this reality and act with responsibility.

He said that even during the curfew, many seemed to be moving about unnecessarily and engaging in activities that would help to spread the virus, then it would be difficult to save the country from the corona pandemic.

The Chief Prelate said that the continued closure of the country would have a detrimental impact on the economy and that in order to reopen the country as soon as possible, the government and the health sector should receive the necessary support from the public.

He stressed that at this critical juncture, everyone must shed their petty differences to defeat the spread of the virus.

He said that the government and the health sector were working hard to rid the country of COVID-19 and that it was important for the people to adhere to the health recommendations in order to reap the benefits of that effort.
