COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s Police Chief has been urged to ensure the safety of a female government medical professional in northern Kilinochchi district Dr. Priyaanthini Kamalasingham amid claims she had faced threats from vested interests.

Jaffna district MP S. Sritharan has also reportedly spoken to the doctor, voicing concern over the developments.

The MP has also reportedly praised Dr. Priyaanthini’s services to Kandavalai residents. He is expected to raise the matter in parliament.

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has written to Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne requesting to ensure the safety of Dr. Priyaanthini, Additional Medical Officer of Health Kandavalei.

“Representations have been made to us by GMOA Branch Union DGH Kilinochchi with regard to the matter,” said the letter signed by GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando.

The letter added: “According to our Branch Union, Dr. Priyaanthini Kamalasingham, Additional Medical Officer of Health Kandavalei, was threatened by local politician and subsequently the suspect was arrested on Jan. 29 through an effective coordination of GMOA Branch Union of DGH Kilinochchi with Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kilinochchi District.

“In this background, District Police Authorities have failed to provide satisfactory security arrangements to Dr. Priyaanthini Kamalasingham, Additional Medical Officer of Health Kandavalai in order to perform her routine duties and responsibilities.
