Sajith: ‘Violent crimes must not go unpunished’

COLOMBO: The Schaffter family made a statement following the demise of Dinesh Schaffter.

It said that law enforcement authorities and family are trying to establish the facts surrounding his death and inquiries are ongoing.

The family requests that the media and the public respect our feelings and privacy at this time and wait for the accurate facts to be established.

Colombo Magistrate’s Court has issued an order preventing former cricket commentator Brian Thomas from leaving the country over the probe into the murder of Schaffter.

Brian Thomas was accused of obtaining millions of rupees on loan from Dinesh Schaffter and that the latter had made three complaints to the CID regarding this, according to media reports.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa commented pn Twitter: “The violent crimes of the recent past must not go unpunished. The Police must be used to protect our citizens, not oppress them. They must look at new ways of better serving & protecting communities. My thoughts are with the family & friends of Dinesh Schaffter.”
