PM Modi’s mother Heeraben Modi passes away
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother Heeraben Modi has died at the age of 99.
She had been admitted to hospital in the western state of Gujarat, where she lived, after her health deteriorated.
“A glorious century rests at the feet of God,” Modi tweeted.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a condolence message on the passing of Prime Minister Modi’s mother.
The message said: “Deeply saddened by the passing of the beloved mother of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. My heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Modi and the family in this hour of grief.”
Modi is in Gujarat and was seen sitting in an ambulance transporting Heeraben’s body.
The Indian prime minister often visited his mother to seek her blessings on important occasions and festivals.
Her life and sacrifices had “shaped” his mind, personality and self-confidence, Mr Modi wrote on 18 June when Heeraben turned 99.
“My Mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers,” he wrote.
They were last seen together in public on Dec. 4 when Mr Modi visited her house during the assembly election in Gujarat, his home state.
Parliamentarian and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Twitter: “Deeply saddened to hear of the demise of Smt. Heeraben Modi. My heartfelt condolences to Prime Ministern @narendramodi ji on the loss of his beloved mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with the PM and his family in this hour of grief.”
