Lanka banana varieties focus of China fruit export plan

COLOMBO: The Chinese government said they are ready to start a task plan to export Sri Lankan fruits including varieties of banana to the Chinese market.

The decision was taken following a preliminary discussion held at the Department of Agrarian Service for the export of fruits grown in Sri Lanka to China.

The discussion took place with the participation of the Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.

A Chinese delegation also participated at this discussion to present facts for the export of fruits to China.

“Cavendish banana species cultivated in our country as well as pineapple, mango, passion fruit and sour banana as well as Soursop (Katu Anoda) are popular in many countries worldwide and many private entities in our country are currently engaged in exporting fruits which are grown locally,” the minister said.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Chinese and Sri Lankan governments several years ago for the export of Sri Lankan bananas to China, but it did not get off the ground. Therefore, steps will be taken to re-launch the plan again.

Under the Agricultural Modernization Project (ASMP), Sri Lanka is exporting 12,500 kg of sour bananas to the Dubai market every Saturday. It was also emphasized that the quality sour bananas are very popular among the people of Dubai.

Accordingly, the Sri Lankan government will take steps to re-start exporting fruits grown in Sri Lanka to China, the minister said.
