Mano Ganesan comments on Wattala Tamil school progress

Colombo district MP Mano Ganesan has highlighted the efforts underway with donors’ support to continue construction work on a Tamil medium school for underprivileged children in Wattala.

The school is being conducted in buildings that have already been put up, the TPA leader pointed out.

The following are his comments:

“Politicians obtained votes from Tamil voters in Wattala promising a Tamil medium school at every election for over 25 years and then shamelessly failed to standby their promises.

“When politicians failed, the great philanthropist late Mr. Manikavasagar succeeded in donating his private land to the government to build and conduct a school for the #Tamil medium #underprivileged children in the area.

“To further Mr. Manickavasagar’s dream, I obtained Cabinet approval for the establishment of “#Arun_Manickavasagar_Hindu_Vidyalayam” & as then minister allocated LKR 30 million for the construction of the school building & construction plan began in 2019.

“However, the first act of Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government that was voted into power at the end of 2019 was to slash my allocation.

“Yet we are continuing with the construction via donations from the Manickavasagar family, and the school is being conducted in the buildings that have been built so far.

“Yesterday, I unveiled the late Manickavasagar’s statue at the school premises with members of his family & the school community.”
