CC defeats President’s proposal to extend AG’s term

A proposal by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to extend the term of Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam by another six months has been defeated at the Constitutional Council meeting.

Even though a recommendation regarding a service extension was presented to the Constitutional Council on two previous occasions, making a decision was delayed due to legal complexities.

The Constitutional Council was scheduled to convene under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana.

President Wickremesinghe recently proposed a 6-month service extension for Rajaratnam, nearing his retirement on June 26.
