Adani project row: Is govt sending wrong signals?

The Adani Group’s Sri Lanka project, as revealed by parliamentarian Mano Ganesan of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), goes beyond merely producing energy for the Sri Lankan grid. It also involves energy exports to India.

Ganesan criticized the government for sending the wrong signals to the world with the exit of Adani Green Energy.

He asserted that the truth was that Adani dropped the project.

He questioned President Anura Kumara Disanayake’s visit to the UAE and his subsequent return, wondering if any investment was coming in.

Mano Ganesan indicated that investors might only come to Sri Lanka “with Indian partners.”

He questioned whether any Middle East or EU investors would consider Sri Lanka “bypassing India.”

Mano Ganesan made the remarks during the debate on Saturday in Parliament.

Ganesan also took to his social media platform, X, to delve deeper into the topic.

On X, he stated: “The exit of #Adani_Green_Energy has sent incorrect signals to the world. I discussed this matter in Parliament yesterday.

“You didn’t drop Adani. The truth is, Adani dropped you. The Adani project is intended to produce energy for the Sri Lankan and Indian grids.

“Our pricing issue, if any, could have been addressed sensibly.

“The potential revenue from energy exports through grid connectivity with India would benefit Sri Lanka. However, you failed to recognise this in the context of the future.

“The biggest mistake is that Adani’s exit has sent incorrect signals to prospective Sri Lanka-bound foreign direct investments (FDIs).

“President AKD visited the UAE and returned. What transpired there? Is there any investment coming in? Investors will only come to Sri Lanka with Indian partners.

“Do you think any Middle East or EU investors would consider Sri Lanka as an alternative to India?”
