Speaker Urged to Investigate MP’s Alleged Remarks on Female Attorney

Leader of the House, Bimal Rathnayake, has urged the Speaker to initiate an investigation into allegations that a Member of Parliament made statements involving sexual violence against prominent activist and Attorney-at-Law, Swasthika Arulingam.
Speaking in Parliament today, Minister Rathnayake highlighted that complaints have been received regarding the MP’s remarks directed at Arulingam. He also mentioned that the issue had been brought to the attention of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and that Parliament was aware of the concerning statements made against the female attorney.
Given the seriousness of the allegations, Minister Rathnayake called on the Speaker to launch an inquiry and take appropriate action.
The demand for an investigation follows derogatory remarks allegedly made by Jaffna MP Archchuna Ramanathan in Parliament against Swasthika Arulingam.
