Wigneswaran-led alliance registered as political party
COLOMBO: The National Election Commission has granted permission to register the Tamil People’s Alliance (TPA) which was established by former Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran, as a political party, Daily News reported.
Wigeneswaran contested the Northern Provincial Council through the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and became the chief minister obtaining the highest number of votes. He formed the TPA in 2019, due to a dispute with the TNA.
He established the new party by changing the name of the Tamil National Assembly.
As the Vigneswaran-formed TPA was not registered as a recognized political party at the time of the 2020 general elections, he contested the election through the Tamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani Party (TMTK) formed with the EPRLF and became an MP.
Vigneswaran handed over the documents required to register his newly formed party to the commission after he became an MP.
